Coffee growing landscape in East Africa

Our story

Rooted in Africa.

Early Batch brings the bold, authentic character of East and Central African coffee closer to home. With roots proudly originating in Burundi, our mission is to support, celebrate, and grow African coffee nations by showcasing the extraordinary depth and world-class quality of the continent's beans.

We focus on premium single-origin lots from Burundi, Tanzania, and selected neighboring origins, prepared with enough care that South African coffee drinkers can taste the place, climate, and farming communities behind every bag.

The record

A practical archive of African coffees.

Coffee should feel documented, not just decorated. That means origin notes, process details, tasting cues, and brew guidance that help you compare coffees before you buy and brew with more confidence once the bag arrives.

What guides us

Support the origin. Respect the cup.

Every bag of Early Batch is more than a morning ritual. It is a direct taste of Africa's growing regions and a vote of support for the continent's farming and roasting communities.

We are interested in coffees that carry a sense of place. That does not mean every cup has to be rare or difficult. It means the coffee should have a reason to exist in the lineup, and the final cup should make that reason easy to understand.

The Volcanic Edge

Many of the coffees we love thrive in the dramatic, high-altitude landscapes of the East African Rift. Cultivated in nutrient-dense volcanic soils, these growing conditions shape the coffee long before it reaches a roaster.

The Burundi Profile

Grown in rich, volcanic silt-loam at high elevations, Burundian coffees are shaped by mineral-dense soils that support bright, crisp acidity and deep, complex sweetness.

The Tanzania Profile

Nourished by volcanic landscapes around Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, and the southern highlands, Tanzanian coffees can show blackcurrant, citrus lift, cocoa depth, and a smooth, full-bodied finish.

The Process

Source

Choose African lots with a clear point of view.

We look for coffees that say something specific about their region: the crisp sweetness of Burundi, the fruit and cocoa balance of Tanzania, and the deeper chocolate and spice of Uganda.

Roast

Roast small batches for clarity and repeatability.

The goal is not to roast every coffee into the same profile. We build each roast around the lot, then keep the batch size controlled so freshness and consistency stay visible in the cup.

Deliver

Send coffee with enough context to brew it well.

Each order is packed with the origin, roast level, process, tasting notes, and brew guidance a home brewer or cafe needs to make a confident first cup.
